Leaks · for your own games

Find the mistakes you keep making in your chess games

Leaks is a diagnosis of your play: the patterns that decide the games you lose, your own positions behind them, and practice where the lesson is one you can find at the board.

01 · The 169 games they lost

One lost game shows a mistake. All of them show a pattern.

Where a game review goes through one game move by move, Leaks looks across your last 250 games at one speed for the patterns that decide the games you lose.

Of a real player’s last 250 blitz games, they lost 169. Each board here is one of those, most at the move that decided it.

02 · The pattern that cost the most games

Piece left unprotected. It decided 37 of 169 lost games.

They walked into it in 71 games; their opponents, in 35. Before you let go of a piece, check what can take it, and what it stopped guarding.

03 · Pattern by pattern

Then the others.

04 · Then you practise it

Back to that game. This time, your move.

Move 15, White to move. In the game, Nf6+ was played here. Find a better move.

The report found 72 positions to practise from these games, the costliest pattern first. They come to you in a Daily Set of 5.

How to find the mistakes you keep making

  1. 1.Take many of your recent games, not one, all at one speed. A single game shows what went wrong once; what keeps happening only shows across many.
  2. 2.In each game you lost, find the move that decided it and name its pattern: a piece left unprotected, a fork, a pin, a back-rank mate.
  3. 3.Count how many lost games each pattern decided, beside your opponents in the same games. The pattern that cost you the most games is the place to start.
  4. 4.Where the lesson is one you can find at the board, practise positions from those games until you find a move that works.

Leaks does the first three for your last 250 games at one speed, and gives you the positions for the fourth.

How it works

  1. 01

    Sign in with Lichess

A free Lichess account is all you need to sign in. The games Leaks reads can be on Lichess or Chess.com.

  2. 02

Link the account you play on

Choose your Lichess or Chess.com account and a speed. Your first report reads your latest 250 games at that speed.

  3. 03

About a minute, on TrueElo’s servers

You can close the page; the report is waiting when you come back. The Lichess games a report reads are kept under your account, without the opponents’ names, until you remove that account. Also kept: the report, the practice it supplies, and the engine’s evaluations of the positions, so the next report is faster. Chess.com games are read and dropped, never stored.

  4. 04

    Read the report, then practise

The pattern that decided the most games you lost comes first, with three of your own positions. Positions whose lesson you can find at the board come to you in a Daily Set of 5.

Your first report is free: the latest 250 games of one account of yours, at the speed you choose, with every finding. Everything after the first report is Plus.

Questions

What is Leaks?

Leaks reads your games and names the patterns that decided the games you lost: a piece left unprotected, a fork, a back-rank mate and others. It shows how many games each pattern cost you beside your opponents in the same games, and charts your openings, clock and habits. Where a lesson is one you can find at the board, it gives you positions from those games to practise.

How do I find my weaknesses in chess?

Look across many of your games rather than one: find the move that decided each game you lost, name its pattern, and start with the pattern that cost you the most games. Leaks does that for your latest games at one speed. Where the lesson is one you can find at the board, it gives you positions from those games to practise.

How is this different from a game review or Chess.com Insights?

A game review goes through one game move by move, and a statistics page such as Chess.com Insights summarises your results. Leaks names the patterns that decide the games you lose, shows your own positions behind each, and sets its counts beside the same counts for the people you played.

What does it cost?

Your first report is free: the latest 250 games of one account of yours, at the speed you choose, with every finding. Free practice opens 5 new positions a day from it; positions you have started come back on their schedule. Plus reads your other accounts and speeds, 500 or 1,000 games, and your newer games when you ask, once 25 new games at that speed are ready, up to 10 reports a day. It opens every practice position and adds Scouting, a report on an opponent before you play them. You can compare a new report with your previous one of the same size; a difference is not proof you improved.

Which of my games does it read?

Your latest eligible Lichess or Chess.com games within one speed, or fewer when fewer are available. The free report reads your latest 250 games. Plus reads 500 or 1,000. A rating only means something within one speed, so mixing blitz and rapid would measure two different skills as one number.

Why do I sign in with Lichess?

Lichess is how TrueElo knows who you are, and a free Lichess account is enough. The games Leaks reads can be on Lichess or Chess.com.

Why is there no accuracy score?

An accuracy score grades one game against perfect play. Leaks finds what decided the games you lost, by pattern, so you see what keeps costing you rather than how one game scored.

Do you keep my games?

The Lichess games a report reads are kept under your account, without the opponents’ names, until you remove that account. Also kept: the report, the practice it supplies, and the engine’s evaluations of the positions, so the next report is faster. Chess.com games are read and dropped, never stored. All of it is private to your account, and deleting your data removes it.

How long does it take?

About a minute for 250 games; a larger report takes a few minutes. Your games are read on TrueElo’s servers, so you can close the page and come back to a finished report.
